Plastic Bags Are More Environmentally Friendly Than You Think

November 2nd, 2009

The world would be a very different place without plastic bags. Today they are an essential part of people’s lives throughout the world. Without them we would not be able to protect and package our foods and products in such an easy way. As the demand for fresh food increases we would not be able to keep up with these requirements if it wasn’t for plastic bags.

They are comprised of two rectangular sheets of strong plastic that have been sealed on three sides with one side left open. The majority of plastic bags are created from polyethylene or polythene resins. The thickness of the sheets used will depend upon what the end product is destined for. Usually such bags are around two hundred and fifty microns in thickness or less.

Depending upon what use they will be put to, plastic bags are available in countless shapes, sizes, strengths and varieties. Some have handles to aid carrying, others have extra width built into them, and there are those that can be sealed to protect the contents.

Although many people now think of plastic bags as not being friendly to the environment it should be noted that they use less material than other forms of packaging such as boxes or cartons. Another important aspect of today’s plastic bags is the ability for them to be recycled. Also it is possible for unwanted bags to be burnt in a process of generating energy from waste.

It is now believed that plastic bags are preferential to the environment in comparison to those made of paper as they use less energy to be manufactured, transported and recycled. Also it should be noted that plastic bags can be reused numerous times due to their strength, whereas those made of paper cannot.

Plastic bags are now a useful addition to every household. Our eating and cooking habits would be very different without them. They help to keep our food fresh and safe from airborne diseases. They are used in our garbage bins to prevent spillage of waste products as well as to contain any unwanted smells. If we think of the items in our bathroom, we will also see how plastic bags are essential. Most soaps and related products are kept protected by plastic bags of various sizes. Also it would be difficult to transport our shopping home from the store without them.

It is not just kitchen and bathroom items that are protected by plastic bags. Most “white” goods are also kept safe in this manner. Whenever we buy a new DVD or CD it will come with plastic packaging, as does almost all computer items. They help to protect against scratches, and damage caused by water and dust. Without plastic, our cherished technological equipment would not last long.

There are also many other uses for plastic bags. In hospitals they are an essential and secure method of keeping excellent hygiene standards by protecting instruments and medicines from contamination. Many farms use plastic bags as a way to keep seeds and fertilizers protected from damp and the elements.
